"You're either with me or damned by me. Choose carefully." - Captain Gunner Trelawny

Captain Gunner Trelawny (aka "Guns" or "Tree", with the latter meant to poke fun at his height) is one of the many ship captains in the Northern Fleet. He first appears in season 4 of the TV series, and has a number of books dedicated to his development and history.

Trelawny himself was a Captain in the True Winds fleet, often running missions alongside of his former mentor, Captain Neil Barnabus.

Physical Appearance[]

Season 4[]

Gunner Trelawny is a captain that appears to be in his early 30s. He has long, dark brown straight hair normally tied down with a white piece of cloth. His natural eye color is an emerald green, and his left eye is covered by a modified eye patch that allows him to see different distances. This eye patch is his "telescope" that he uses to view things from afar. When removing his telescope, the left side of Gunner's face sports a scar, suggesting he was slashed at before. He sports a short mustache and beard, often saying it's a stubble.

He has a brown coat that sports a left shoulder and arm armor pad. He also wears a scarf with a pin symbolizing his alliance with the Scribe-Feather major fleet. He wears a dark blue and black checkered vest and white dress blouse underneath it. Over his dark brown pants and black boots, Gunner sports a unique belt that held his rapier gun. His weapon appeared to have the blade of a rapier and an entire gun as its handle. When the safety is on, the weapon acts more of a rapier. When the safety is off, the rapier part is easily removable and Gunner is able to shoot the gun part of the weapon at will. On the other side of his belt hangs what appears to be a tattered book. What that book his has yet to be explained.

Season 5[]

After having returned to the Northern Fleet, Gunner sports a different appearance. He still appears to be in his early 30s, but has confessed to his friend Terrance that he's probably about 37 years old. His hair is no longer tied down and is simply let loose. He still wears his modified eye patch that he had back in season 4. However, he does take it off when it's not on use. Instead of his brown coat, left arm shoulder and arm covering, he sports a dark blue coat with black lining on it. Underneath it he wears a white dress blouse with a pale blue vest that holds a pocket watch. He has pants that sport the same dark blue hue of his jacket and black boots.

Gunner still wears the same belt as he did in season 4, but instead of the rapier gun combo weapon he had, it looks like he simply uses a simple dagger and a gun.

Season 4[]

Gunner Trelawny is cold, distant, and easily angered. He appears to have a lack of patience when dealing with rest of the Northern Fleet. He comes off as uncaring and shows little to no compassion to any of the fleet members. Probably the most prominent part of his personality could be summed up in one quote from the captain himself: "I can't trust the whole lot o' ya."

Season 5[]

After returning to the Northern Fleet to seek for solace and a second chance, Gunner Trelawny is extremely distant and silent. He starts opening up after meeting up again with fellow Fleet member Terrance. As the episode progresses, it is revealed that Gunner is a very quiet and oblivious man who tends to miss hints thrown at his direction. When drunk, he becomes very outgoing and happy. The only moment when he appears to be serious is when he is fighting off the raiders that try to overthrow a small section of the fleet.

History[]

Early Life[]

According to the book "SOTNF: Guns and Daggers," Gunner Trelawny's real name is Garrison Roe Trelawny. Born into a noble family, Garrison was expected to act and behave gentlemanly. His parents hoped to raise him properly enough so that he could marry a princess and start a royal lineage through him. At a very young age, Garrison was a very curious child who would explore the world and collect insects. This resulted in his parents disciplining him and trying to keep him at home, but it only made his curiosity grow more. As he grew older, his family's expectations overwhelmed him and forced him to run away. Unfortunately, that didn't stop his parents from hunting him down. Seeing that their teachings were not getting through his "thick skull," his parents resorted to being very strict. It didn't give Garrison much room to compensate for their bitterness; he's unable to convince his parents that he needed some sort of break from all this pressure. His parents stated that they didn't "trust him enough" to do as told. As a result, not only did he lose his trust in his parents, but he lost any and all respect for them. All those years of trying to make them happy only made Garrison miserable.

One day, out of the blue, a fleet of ships visited Garrison's city to restock on goods. As means of showing favor to potential trade partners, his parents forced Garrison to meet with the fleet of ships. In fear of being mistreated by his parents again, he went to go greet the captains. When he got there, it turned out that the fleet of ships was the True Winds fleet. Garrison heard stories of this specific group and eventually decided to sneak onto the ship to escape his family. It took some time for anyone to notice he was around, but when he was caught, he was brought before Captain Neil Barnabus. Garrison was still a young man in his teens during this time. Before the captain could even speak, Garrison began pleading as though his life depended on it. He vowed he would take care of the ship, just as long as he did not return to the city.

Somehow, after talking to the captain, Garrison was allowed to stay on the ship. He was used to assist with carrying cargo around and making sure the ship was in top shape throughout the trip. One day, on a stop, Barnabus took Garrison along with him and they began talking. Garrison knew better than to trust anyone he wasn't familiar with, but he felt that Neil was like a father figure he desperately needed. After having learned about Garrison's true reason behind sneaking onto the ship, Neil took Garrison under his wing and made him his apprentice. Garrison Roe Trelawny was renamed to Gunner Trelawny.

After a few years, Trelawny somehow got left behind in a port city despite having been told by Barnabus to stay on board the ship. It wasn't until it was too late that Gunner realize that they left without him. He was distraught, and spiraled into depression as he questioned why exactly he was left behind. From there, he was eventually picked up by The Daggers and became a strong, vicious captain within the fleet. He swore to find the True Winds fleet and demand a reason for their abandoning him. His superiors advised Gunner to never get into contact with the Four Fleets, but Gunner disregarded their words and sailed out to find them.

Infiltrating The Four Fleets[]

Trelawny sailed with his own ship and entered into the Four Fleets, but entered into the Scribe Feathers fleet in order to gather information that could potentially assist with finding the True Winds. Of course, this doesn't last for very long as the Scribe Feathers suspect him of stealing confidential information meant only to the eyes of a Scribe Feather. Not only that, but his treatment of his crew and other fleet members was discouraging. So much complaints had finally reached to the leaders of the fleet, and they were forced to kick Trelawny and his ship out of the fleet. After that, he and his crew stayed adrift at sea until they somehow bumped into the True Winds. While his crew was excited about this development, Trelawny wasn't. It seemed that having failed his quest drove him into a deep depression.
